Shift, the company which powers the Shift BTC card of Coinbase is reportedly shutting down operations by April. The info was as result of the post with the upload of an email on Reddit by the Shift team.
Shift BTC card allows for the spending of virtual currency directly from Coinbase with the use of Visa debit card. As earlier stated, the service will stop working as soon as April 11, the email does state that Shift plans to relaunch the program and issue cards in the near future. Shift did not state the reason for the withdrawal of its own product.
The Shift Card was launched by Coinbase back in 2015 after signing a partnership with Shift Payment. The card was issued by the Metropolitan Commercial Bank and could be used in both VISA and Mastercard payment networks.
Despite this loss of service provided to its users , Coinbase, one of the most popular digital currency platforms available in the market has had a very busy February attempting to improve user experience and widen its features. Earlier this month, the cryptocurrency exchange announced that it would allow residents of the European Union, as well as those living in European Free Trade Association countries, to withdraw their fiat currency using PayPal. US residents were afforded the same ability in December 2018 and last week Coinbase in a controversial move, unveiled a feature allowing users to store the private keys to their cryptocurrency wallets in the cloud.
